The challenge
Cyberattacks cost companies billions of dollars each year. The obligatory "this is important, please read..." note from IT falls woefully short of addressing the issue. So how do you break through the clutter to reach 5000+ global associates on the front lines to heighten awareness, keep cyber security top of mind, and begin to change behavior?
The solution
Build a campaign that's disruptive, fun, engaging, and competitive. Multiple touchpoints were deployed - from emails to environmental graphics to physical and digital games - all designed to teach and inform (minus the scare tactics) in bite sized chunks while associates took breaks in their busy schedules.
Let the games begin.
Prizes were given out to early engagers, high scores, and in drawings. The grand prize was an iPad. Associates could monitor the leaderboard on the company's internal social platform. The competition was on.
For non-gamers we created crossword puzzles using definitions of cyber security related words (phishing, spyware, etc.) to educate in a fun way. Associates completed the puzzles to be entered into the contest. Large versions of the crossword puzzles were hung around the offices for anyone to fill-in.
Block games were also created and placed around the offices for associates to play, reminding them that it can take only one false move for the whole structure to come tumbling down.
A limited number of t-shirts were made to give away as prizes. This increased their cachet value tremendously and helped drive engagement.
Environmental graphics decorated the windows and walls of the offices around the world. We also created small clings that could be placed on associate’s computers and desks.
The site consisted of important facts, eye-opening statistics, and other useful information regarding cyber security. It also hosted the digital game and PDF version of the crossword puzzle for associates to download.
“It's not a game” was a real game-changer. By enabling associates to learn and understand more about cyber security while playing games, it didn't seem like a pain to do it. Play games, win prizes, and learn…
Surpassed expectations by directly engaging nearly 65% of associates via the Cyber Space Invaders game.
Attained global awareness as noted by post-campaign questionnaires.
Prompted a nearly 10% increase in phishing activity reported to the internal IT department, suggesting heightened threat awareness.
Fact: small businesses are almost as likely as large corporations to experience a data breach.
