The challenge
JDA Learn - the predecessor to Blue Sky Learning - had some useful resources and opportunities to learn, however; it was not being utilized. The interface was convoluted and the navigation was confusing. There was also a perception that the associates learning site was really just for mandatory compliance training and training regarding internal products. So, how do we make associates aware of and get excited about existing and new learning opportunities?
The solution
Rethink everything. Create a better learning experience with Blue SKY Learning. Deliver a human-centered experience. Create a fresh new brand that would be carried through all communications and ongoing campaigns that focuses on associates. Get their attention and encourage them with meaningful messaging that isn't blah.
During our discussions we stressed Blue SKY Learning needs to do what it takes to truly invest in themselves before associates will invest in them. This meant taking time to rethink everything while keeping in mind that we needed to create, develop, and launch the brand and campaign as well as start from scratch on the UX and delivery methods. And it all needed to be done ASAP.
Working with leaders of the HR team we crafted messaging and chose imagery that was genuinely inclusive without feeling forced. We also concentrated on delivering new styles of courses and resources including things like LinkedIn Learning.
Imagery was a crucial part of changing associates’ perceptions and garnering interest. We emphasized that imagery needed to be thoughtful, inclusive, full of life and personality. It needed to be fun, fresh, and unexpected. It needed to come from a very different perspective than the standard “learning and/or HR type” imagery.
The images did not need to be, nor should they be literal. They need to represent lives and the people who live them.
Showing people doing activities in their lives outside of work helped illustrate the fact that learning never stops. This approach also helped give the vibe that Blue SKY Learning understands associates have a life outside of work, while still promoting learning and growth at work as well.
We created a tool kit for the Blue SKY Learning team packed with creative headlines, quotes about learning, PowerPoint templates, email templates, and an extensive catalog of images and graphics enabling them to stay on-brand an hit the ground running.
Associates face a blizzard of emails on a daily basis. The need for a new approach to emails and other communications was addressed. All communications needed to be concise, meaningful, and useful. They were to be delivered in bite sized chunks for easy understanding and digestion.
All communication channels lead to the new website which was designed to be amazingly user friendly and work on any device. This dramatically improved engagement. It featured a plethora of trainings, webinars, and resources that were easily found, understood, and interesting.
Previously, associates were frustrated, uninterested, unaware of and/or didn't feel that they had time to utilize the learn website due to the previous methods and lack of thought into UX. This initiative and campaign changed that. It got their attention and helped them realize that Blue SKY Learning was indeed innovative and different than anything that came before it. It was certainly worth checking out.
Associates responded emphatically. There was a significant growth in associate engagement, awareness, and in general interest. This success is ongoing as Blue SKY Learning continues to evolve and become even more and more valuable to associates.
It proved to leadership that a learning initiative like this, when done correctly, is invaluable to culture and keeps learning top of mind.
Team leaders at every level across the organization were now expected to allow associates to take time and work on their growth and development.
This undertaking helped shift the culture.
